Faux Textures for Beautiful Walls
When it comes to texture, the sky’s the limit. Today, at any hardware store, you can peruse samples of textured surfaces in the paint department. Instead of a traditional splatter drag texture (common in new homes), a thick Mediterranean or waterfall texture can transform a wall into a work of art.
Popular textures include:
- Orange peel (shot through a gun)
- Crow’s foot (old style, applied with a brush)
- Splatter drag (dragged orange peel)
- Skip trial (applied with a trial in strokes)
- Mediterranean (thickly applied, then lightly dragged)
- Waterfall (thickly applied and allowed to sag)
In addition to textured surface beneath paint, the paint itself can have a special finish. For instance, sand may be added to paint create texture. Sand texture creates a random pattern and is often used in commercial applications.
Glaze is also popular as a second or topcoat over a solid painted wall. In addition, glaze highlights the characteristics of a textured wall. Any color paint can be made into a glaze. Most often, glaze is applied with a brush, then hand-wiped off. Darker color is left in the deep areas of a textured wall.
